Central Otago Region

Central Otago is a land of contrast and outstanding natural beauty with breathtaking scenery, snow-capped mountains, golden undulating hills, clear blue skies in daytime and star-studded night skies, glistening lakes, tumbling rivers and streams, rocks, tussocks and thyme.

"Central," as our region is affectionately known, covers an area of 10,000km and has less than 17,000 permanent residents!

Another fabulous time in Central Otago, made ever more special by the fabulous accommodation. This is a special part of the country and Burn Cottage Retreat is at the heart of it.

It is a place to rest, rejuvenate and indulge. Visitors are always amazed by our vast open spaces and clean living which is unsurpassed anywhere in the world.

With four distinct seasons, we are New Zealand's hottest, driest and coldest region, with crisp, dry, refreshing air, very low average rainfalls (358mm per annum) and temperatures varying from -8 degrees Celcius in winter and soaring to the high 30's in summer.

Our fabulous climate means we can enjoy the outdoors all year round;  long, hot hazy summer days (daylight remains until 10pm in summer) give way to truly spectacular autumn colours and winter snowfalls and hoar frosts turn into a magical abundance of blossom in spring. Every season is a photographer's dream!

From the harshest of climates comes the finest of produce.  We are world renowned for producing New Zealand's finest Merino wool, some of the world's best Pinot Noir and fine wines. The stone fruit capital of the south, we produce the best sun-ripened cherries, apricots, nectarines and peaches in abundance.

Burn Cottage Retreat is very close to the best orchards and vineyards in the region.

Such a wonderful, welcoming retreat in beautiful gardens. An oasis in the heat of summer here. The cottage was perfect, spacious, well designed and complete with everything we needed. Books were excellent. Rose, Phil and Meg were excellent company. Thanks so much!!

Central Otago is a natural arena for numerous events, offering something for everyone from air shows to car shows and motorcycle rallies to multisport events, horses and history.  The Otago Central Rail Trail is very popular with both local and international visitors.  We love to celebrate and showcase our area with festivals for wine, food, blossoms and thyme.

Cromwell, in the heart of Central Otago and the Southern Lakes region, enjoys close proximity to Wanaka, Queenstown, Arrowtown, Southland, Fiordland and the West Coast, making it a perfect base from which to explore the entire region.

Whatever the season or reason for your visit, we look forward to sharing and enhancing your stay at Burn Cottage Retreat and in our beautiful region.  We know you will be enchanted and you will be reluctant to leave!
